Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
